HGV curbs mean peace returns to Freshford
THE battle to ban HGVs from tiny lanes in Freshford is paying off at last.
Ashes Lane and even steeper Rosemary Lane have been almost free of lorries since new Euro-signs went up in April and Navteq deleted the roads as satnav "routes of choice" through the village.
The return to peace was welcomed by Alan Cunningham, of Ashes Lane, who had campaigned for years against the HGVs.
But he said the satnav makers would still need to "refine" their devices to keep lorries out of all small lanes – and HGV owners needed to ensure that satnavs in their cabs were regularly updated.

Freshford Somerset: an Introduction
Freshford is in 2011 a village dating back a thousand years or more.
Some of the property in the village is located in Wiltshire and some in
Bath and North-East Somerset (known as BANES). This affects the choice of
secondary school for parents, and splits up children who have grown up
together in their primary school.
The children should be able to continue their education together when
they leave the primary school where they have grown up together.
Unfortunately, this division of Freshford between Wiltshire and Somerset
(B&NES) is not the result of some recent skulduggery, yet its affects
extend into the 21st Century. The ghosts continue to extend their
influence into the time when people are free to use their intelligence,
rather than witchcraft or be bound by land divisions created by the
church, or the Normans. And guess what; it is the ghosts that rule. Why
can't parents choose the nearest school to where they live?
Parental Choice of School Apart from the educational issues
which are important to Freshford, the village is arguably the finest
village in this part of the west country. This website includes many
photographs that record the attractive nature not only of the village but

Bradford on Avon town bridge video survey of traffic

A36 to A46 link road is not necessary
Once again we read mention of the A36 to A46 link road as being a solution to through traffic in the World Heritage City of Bath. Traffic from the south coast ports will be comsiderably reduced when The Port of Bristol's Deep Sea Container terminal (DSCT) is completed. The reason being is that it will be far cheaper to ship the containers to Bristol than transport them by road from the south coast. I think that it is not a good idea to buy non-stick pans as they don't last very long. Once the pan is failing people usually buy another one. The existing pan is either shoved to the back of a cupboard or hopefully recycled. I decided to stick to, excuse the pun, cast iron enamelled cookware. My pride of joy is a cast iron wok from Lecreuset that has a flat bottom and so can be used on any cooker, including induction hobs. Unless I drop it, it will last for hundreds of years :) It is expensive, costing over £100, but is a pleasure to use and will pay for itself in time. The article in the Daily Mail is another very good reason to avoid non-stick pans. Sustainable is safe! Geoff Edwards

Road safety? Cyclists and the car 30 mph limit but 21 deaths in London!
London had 21 deaths in 2008 and over 350 cyclists were seriously injured. London is subject to a 30 mph limit and either that limit is ignored or more likely it does not make any difference a three quarter ton car will kill at less than 30 mph there is also a problem with HGVs seeing cyclists who are stopped at traffic lights or turning . So what can we do? spend millions on road signs and painting the road, in London's case blue? Read more?
Talk Talk or BT a cautionary tale or where is Dido Harding?
No, not a tale at all, my narrative is true. Perhaps to simply publish a letter that I wrote to the CEO of Talk Talk Dido Harding on the 6th August 2010 will serve to highlight the risks of using another telecommunications company when we have BT. My letter was the second letter that I wrote to the CEO of Talk Talk.
Writing to the CEO of a company usually ensures that the letter will be redirected, if necessary, to the most appropriate person or department and often helps to ensure that the complaint, if that is what it is, is dealt with satisfactorily.
I have not had a reply from Dido Harding, whose actual name is Diana, or anyone else, yet. I did get a letter as a result of my first letter. The letter was from someone in Customer Relations asserting that I still have an account with Talk Talk that's why I am still being billed.

RE: “my account”
I wrote to you on the 15th June 2010. Unfortunately, your office did not reply to my letter but did instruct Talk Talk Customer Relations to write to me. A copy of that letter dated the 19th June 2010 is attached.
Your company still seem to think that I have a telephone service with Talk Talk.
I have had to sift through my documents to find the evidence to prove that my service provider is BT and has been from the 16th February 2010. I am annoyed that a recent letter is threatening me, in particular, with the possibility of my credit rating being affected.
I have marked the accompanying documents which are in reverse chronological order:
A,B,C,D,E,F,G. After a recent phone call to BT I was told to supply your company with this reference: Jan VOL 011-28644xxxxxx
I expect all monies taken from my bank account since the termination of my contract to be refunded and any entry that may have been made to a credit reference company to be amended.

I have of course irrefutable proof that my Talk Talk account was transferred to BT having letters from both companies confirming the arrangements so what the hell has gone wrong?

Update: The matter has been resolved. Apparently, Talk Talk's system couldn't cope with its rapid expansion. They now have over 4 million customers. I hope that the time I had to spend on this issue will have resulted in a similar situation not happening again.

Diesel UK £1.41 a Litre diesel USA $3.96 a gallon, Rip-off UK!
Using the current exchange for the GB pound and the US dollar ($1.60 =£1) we are paying £6.27 a gallon. In US dollars this would be equivalent to $10.03! (Except that one UK gallon is 1.2 US gallons.) So the USD price equivalent to what we are paying for our diesel is $8.36 a gallon. We are paying twice what US drivers pay for their fuel. This website, is now almost six years old. It is still growing. Although the website is provided for the use of residents of Freshford Somerset, or to give it its full address Freshford Bath & North East Somerset it has grown to include not only the local area but national and international issues in its news and comment. The English village is not isolated from the rest of the country. We are receiving over 1,000 visitors a month now from over twenty countries. That's the website not the village.
There is little to write on issues that only affect the English village. The village is close to other villages and towns, in the case of Freshford we are close to the Royal City of Bath and our nearest supermarket is in Bradford on Avon. This means that changes outside of Freshford could affect us. FreshfordSomerset is a community type of website. the other different types of websites we have designed include:

What is the worst spam website? In my opinion ClickOrlando. This website sends me email several times a day, day after *****day. There is a link to unsubscribe but I never subscribed to this news site anyway. To unsubscribe they want all sorts of information that I have no intention of supplying, especially since I have not subscribed to this service. I have no interest in Florida or in its news service. Why should I? I live in England. Fortunately, Outlook traps the email and puts it in my Junk Email folder. The reason that this "service" exists is to bring in revenue from advertisers.
