HGV curbs mean peace returns to Freshford

THE battle to ban HGVs from tiny lanes in Freshford is paying off at last.
Ashes Lane and even steeper Rosemary Lane have been almost free of lorries since new Euro-signs went up in April and Navteq deleted the roads as satnav "routes of choice" through the village.
The return to peace was welcomed by Alan Cunningham, of Ashes Lane, who had campaigned for years against the HGVs.
But he said the satnav makers would still need to "refine" their devices to keep lorries out of all small lanes – and HGV owners needed to ensure that satnavs in their cabs were regularly updated.

Freshford Somerset: an Introduction

Freshford is in 2010 a village dating back a thousand years or more.  Some of the property in the village is located in Wiltshire and some in Bath and North-East Somerset (known as BANES). This affects the choice of secondary school for parents, and splits up children who have grown up together in their primary school.

 The children should be able to continue their education together when they leave the primary school where they have grown up together.  Unfortunately, this division of Freshford between Wiltshire and Somerset (B&NES) is not the result of some recent skulduggery, yet its affects extend into the 21st Century. The ghosts continue to extend their influence into the time when people are free to use their intelligence, rather than witchcraft or be bound by land divisions created by the church, or the Normans. And guess what; it is the ghosts that rule. Why can't parents choose the nearest school to where they live? Parental Choice of School  Apart from the educational issues which are important to Freshford, the village is arguably the finest village in this part of the west country. Swindon scraps speed cameras. The result? Drivers speed

Swindon has decided to scrap its speed cameras, primarily due to lack of funding from the government.  I was driving along the A419, the Circencester road, last night in Swindon heading towards The District Centre.  At least three cars shot by me ignoring the 40 mph speed limit. I estimate that the speed of the cars was 60 mph or more. Exactly what one would expect after speed cameras have been switched off.  Whilst the majority of drivers will drive sensibly there are those that will not.

One could ask why do these speed cameras cost so much to install and operate? Apparently, the cheapest road sign costs about £500. Geoff Edwards (I'll add this news to the Speed Limits category on the forum for anyone who wants to comment)

Wiltshire Council threat to close Bradford on Avon pool

The Joint Local Transport Plan: have your say

The West of England is a prosperous area with an excellent quality of life and a growing national and international profile. However, rapid growth means that the sub-region faces increasing pressure on its infrastructure, and it is still the case that there are too many neighbourhoods that do not share in its prosperity.

The Partnership was formed in response to these opportunities and challenges. It consists of four unitary authorities: Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire; and a range of social, economic and environmental partners.

The public are invited to complete a short questionnaire expressing their concern for the priorities that have been indentified for the Joint Local Transport Plan No 3 (JLTP3). I live in Wiltshire, but live just a few miles from the city of Bath, closer in fact than many residents of some parts of the four unitary authorites that form the West of England Partnership. I feel quite entitled to add my comments on the JLTP3 which is at present in draft form and would encourage other Wiltshire, as well as BANES residents to do the same. The JLTP3 is an important document that will affect anyone living in the area for years to come.  The questionaire is online and there are also sections of the JLTP3 that can also be accessed from the website with opportunites for the public to comment online.

A36 Link road is unnecessary

Whilst it is not at all difficult to understand why the city of Bath wants to divert through traffic from the A36 to the M46 without traffic going through the town. The resurrection of the proposed link road is not necessary. It is not necessary because most of the HGV traffic should not be using the A36 to reach the M4. Read more

What can we do to slow speeding motorists?

I have been adding documents on Speed Limits to the forum. Locally we are concerned by the speed at which motorists are going through our villages. Freshford already has a 20mph limit and Limpley Stoke is going to have a 20mph trial limit, there is agitation in Westwood for a reduction in the speed limit as well.  Whilst these villages do not have alarming accident statistics many residents feel at risk from inconsiderate drivers.  The trouble with Freshford is that the 20mph limit does not apply to Sharpstone and Park Corner. By what stretch of the imagination does the highway authority think that The Tyning, for example, merits a 30mph speed limit?  I think on review the speed limit should be extended to Abbey lane's junction with Rosemary lane.

Drive at no more than your desired speed limit for your village?

This is what I think we can do as motorists we can drive slowly and those that approach from behind will have to lower their speed. The posted speed limit is the absolute maximum that a vehicle may drive at and is no guarantee of safety, so if I want to amble along I am entitled to do so, fuel is not going to get cheaper either. If anyone decides to tailgate me, I drive slower, sometimes they recover use of their brain and drop back.

Are they worth their Salt?

So not only do we have deteriorating roads while the Government are contemplating building new airport runways but they are now running out of salt! I can understand that we hardly need to invest in snowploughs but surely making sure that there is enough salt for this sort of unusual weather event is not beyond the public purse or rather more likely beyond the ability of the Department of Transport to plan ahead. Salt

Mortgage payments reduced? No!

I have a standard variable rate with a well known building society. (after my capped rate ended) Have I been benefiting from the reduced Bank of England interest rate? No. Newslink Why not? It is because I opted for an annual review. Until my account is reviewed I am still paying over seven per cent. Are you a mug as well? I have now arranged to alter my account to reflect alterations in the base rate. Obviously, the building society have not acted illegally, but I think that I have been misled. I just thought that the rate would be applied automatically and although I am paying so much a month I would be just reducing my capital repayments by what I thought to be an overpayment. Not so! I am paying more interest on the loan than I need to.  Are you?

I wonder how many other people out there think that they are paying less? If you are unsure - phone your mortgage company - mine took over ten minutes to reply. At least my adviser was very competent and transferred me to a colleague in order to change my account to one that would reflect changes in the standard variable rate on a daily basis (payments will go up as well as down!)

I don't think I have been simply misled by my mortgage company I feel that I have been cheated of this reduction in the bank rate. I will not mention the company, as I might need a further advance or might want to transfer my mortgage in future to a new property.

NO! Correction, the person who advised me made a mistake. She should have said that my interest rate is adjusted annually therefore, my monthly payments remain the same. However, the reduction in interest rate is applied to my account immediately it is implemented by the company. I should rest assured that I have thus repaid a greater amount off my mortage loan. She did say that I may change the way in which the interest rate is applied to my account to a Daily Basis - which is what I did. I would not have bothered if I had been informed correctly. I did an Internet search at the time, with no result. No wonder they are besieged with phone calls!  However I have found an advisory article published in early December 2008 and I did manage to confirm that my mortgage payments would reduce the term, as I would have been in affect making additional repayments.  The Google search terms I used were:   my mortgage company current standard variable interest rate.

ClickOrlando.com Spam website?

What is the worst spam website? In my opinion ClickOrlando. This website sends me email several times a day, day after *****day. There is a link to unsubscribe but I never subscribed to this news site anyway. To unsubscribe they want all sorts of information that I have no intention of supplying, especially since I have not subscribed to this service.  I have no interest in Florida or in its news service. Why should I? I live in England. Fortunately, Outlook traps the email and puts it in my Junk Email folder. The reason that this "service" exists is to bring in revenue from advertisers. As a matter of policy, I do not buy goods or services from any unsolicited email I receive. Apparently, others do, that's why we have spam.
